Create a Top-Quality Video Master

We at Films Hive are quality fanatics. You’ll want your film or show to look the best to your audience all streaming channels.

Here’s how to create the perfect video output to upload.

We’re not an “Online Video” site. So don’t submit a “YouTube output”. Treat us like a digital movie theater film festival, TV network, or film festival.

Upload only Broadcast / Film Festival Grade Masters.

To export, use only ProRes HQ or DNxHR HQ, and PCM audio. These are production codecs. Preferably no H.264. Definitely, no presets with YouTube or Vimeo, please.

Debating if you submit 1080p or 4K? Go for the 4K! We want the best.

Size doesn’t matter – the bigger, the better*. As a rule of thumb, a 90 min movie should be 100 GB or more. Our file size limit is 1TB, so go ahead and send us the best quality video you have. It might take a few hours, or even a day or more to upload. That’s ok (and still easier, safer, and faster than FedEx’ing hard drives)!

Video Codec

Preferred:

  • Apple ProRes 422 & 422 HQ (not LT, Proxy, 4444, XQ or any other)
  • Avid DNxHR (SQ & up)
  • Avid DNxHD (min. 145 for 1080p, 80 for 720p, 60 for SD)

Potentially Acceptable:

  • H.264, min. 2 MBit/s for SD, 15 MBit/s for HD, 50 MBit/s for UHD/4k.
  • H.265, min. 2 MBit/s for SD, 15 MBit/s for HD, 50 MBit/s for UHD/4k
  • MPEG-2,
  • DV, DVCAM, DVCPRO and variants

Title must meet Films Hive’s Compression Requirements. Learn More.

File Format

mov, mp4, mpg/mpeg, ts, mkv, and ogg. Max 1TB file size.

Video

  • Max. 2 sec before program starts and 2 sec after program ends. No color bars, slate, MPAA/FBI cards, test-tone, pre-roll, post-roll.
  • Video must start and end on at least 1 black frame.
  • No burned-in subtitles throughout (Exception: Trailer – see below). Partial burned-in subtitles are acceptable for mixed-language or inaudible dialogue. See Text Tracks.
  • Not interlaced. Learn more.
  • No blended frames, ghosting. Learn more.
  • No padding, letterboxing, pillarboxing.
  • No watermark or logo burned-in throughout

Frame rates

Original framerate: 23.976, 24, 25, 29.97 or 30. Do not convert framerate unless the source is not a supported one, for example, do convert 59.97/60 fps to 29.97/30 fps.

Avoid duplicated frames and blended frames.

Chapter & Ad Breaks

How To Add Chapter & Ad Breaks

Audio

Codec

  • PCM: minimum 48 kHz 16 Bit
  • AAC, or MP3: minimum 128 kbps (stereo)
  • AC-3: minimum 192 kbps (stereo)

Channel layout

Stereo (Lt Rt) is required. We also support any additional audio stream and channel configuration including all surround formats. With surround audio, discrete Lt Rt audio is required in addition.

If the title is or was ever available in surround, we require surround plus Lt Rt tracks.

Here are some examples.

Trailer

In addition to the requirements above (Codec, Resolution, etc.):

  • Burned-in English subtitles for non-English dialog required
  • Max. 6 min, recommended 2:30 or less
  • Only 1 trailer

Our requirement is that all content must be submitted with English closed captions.

Closed captions serve not only hearing-impaired viewers but also fulfill the demands of streaming channels for various reasons beyond hearing issues. Nowadays, audiences often watch films in noisy cafes, on commuter trains, in bars, or simply at home while multitasking with cooking and children. Closed captions enable viewers in all these scenarios to comfortably enjoy your content.

Basic Requirements:

– We prefer the SubRip (.srt) format in plain UTF-8. We recommend using a text editor like BBEdit to open and save your .srt files in UTF-8 format.
– Scenarist Closed Captions (.scc) are also accepted. SCC files require the selection of a frame rate. Learn more about SCC.
– All text tracks should be complete, accurate, and synchronized with the video at all times.
– Proper punctuation and spelling are essential.
– Avoid using formatting tags.
– For other file formats, you can convert them to SubRip using the following applications or web apps: Subtitle Edit, Subtitle Converter, REV Caption Converter.
– We recommend playing back your video in our system with the text track enabled, jumping to random spots to ensure the text track remains in sync.

Text Track Rule Requirements:

– Each subtitle should be limited to a maximum of 43 characters per line.
– Maintain a minimum gap of 66 milliseconds between subtitles.
– The maximum characters per second should not exceed 25.
– Subtitle duration should range from a minimum of 800 milliseconds to a maximum of 8000 milliseconds.
– Each subtitle should not exceed a maximum of 2 lines.
– Subtitles shorter than 43 characters should remain unbroken.
– We recommend using the “Fix common error” feature in Subtitle Edit to identify and rectify any rule errors before submitting your title.

Mixed Language Titles:

– If English is the primary audio language, you can include burned-in English subtitles for non-English dialogue and provide a separate English closed caption file that excludes the lines already burned-in.
– If English is a secondary audio language, the main video should be provided without burned-in subtitles. Instead, you should include a complete English closed caption file that covers all dialogues and atmospherics. Additionally, it is recommended to upload two additional English text tracks:
1. English subtitles solely for non-English dialogue, excluding atmospherics.
2. English closed captions for English dialogue along with atmospherics.
